Stretching along the Danube is the Danube Limes, which once marked the northern border of the Roman Empire. For the past few years, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Austria – a testament to thousands of years of history that vividly transports visitors into the world of Roman legionaries.
For North American visitors, discovering the remains of Roman settlements, fortifications and watchtowers is just as fascinating as visiting reconstructed Roman architecture or open-air museums on the East Coast that illustrate Roman lifestyle and military technology. Amidst ruins, wall remnants and excavations, history becomes tangible and comes to life.
Programme:
The journey of discovery begins with the Burgus Oberranna, a late-antique border post of the Danube Limes. On a guided tour, you will learn all about the function and significance of the Roman military base.
This is followed by a tour of the Balneum and Roman baths in the Schlögen Roman Park, focusing on Roman bathing culture. On request, the tour can be combined with a short walk to the Danube viewpoint, the former observation point overlooking the Limes.
The tour concludes with a visit to the Roman town of Enns (Lauriacum): your guide will explain the ancient townscape, the forum, the market hall with underfloor heating, magnificent villas, the craftsmen’s quarter, the legionaries’ civilian settlements and cemeteries. This brings to life a vivid picture of Roman urban life from almost two millennia ago.
