In the fertile Machland region of Upper Austria, everything revolves around honest farming, regional produce and authentic flavour. Here, carefully cultivated fruits are transformed into high-quality specialities – from the intense aronia berry to characterful wines.
For guests from North America, this experience is reminiscent of visits to family-run farms in Napa Valley or the Okanagan Valley – where regionality, craftsmanship and enjoyment go hand in hand. Except that here, alongside wine, the focus is on a ‘superfruit’ still little known in Europe: the aronia, also known as the black chokeberry.
Programme:
Exciting insights into the cultivation and processing of aronia berries are on offer at Froschauer in Naarn. During a guided tour of the estate, you will learn how juices, jams, liqueurs and other specialities are made from the small, dark purple fruits. Afterwards, you will sample selected products and discover the delicately tart and fruity flavour of this special berry.
In the afternoon, you will visit the Greindl family’s winery. The young winemakers will give you a warm welcome with a drink before you learn more about cultivation and the region’s unique characteristics during a tour of the vineyard. You will then enjoy a tasting of various wines. The delightful finale is a hearty winemaker’s snack – the perfect end to a day full of regional specialities in the Machland.
