Freistadt Braucommune Freistadt – beer culture with history
Included services:
- Guided city tour in Freistadt
- Guided tour of the historic Freistadt brewery
- Insight into the brewhouse, fermentation and storage cellar
- Beer tasting
If you want to experience real Upper Austrian brewing, you can't miss the Braucommune Freistadt. For more than 200 years, it has connected the people of this medieval city in a very special way: Every homeowner within the city walls is still a co-owner of the brewery today – a cooperative success model that is unique in Austria and is reminiscent of small craft breweries in Vermont or family breweries in British Columbia, only with a touch of medieval city history.
During a guided tour of the historic brewing commune, you will learn why Freistadt is proud of Europe's last open malt floor and what that means for the special taste. From the historic brewing kettles to the modern tasting room, you will dive deep into the world of Freistadt beer. And of course, tasting is not to be missed: During a tasting directly in the brewhouse, you will taste the subtle differences that turn water, malt, hops and passion into a real Upper Austrian original.
Program:
- Guided walk through the picturesque old town of Freistadt, which offers a journey back in time to the Middle Ages with its well-preserved city walls and charming alleys
- Arrival at the Braucommune Freistadt – here you will be warmly welcomed with a welcome drink
- Guided tour of the brewery: discover the last open malt floor in Europe, learn interesting facts about brewing techniques, recipes and the history of this special beer community
