The Linzer Torte – older than apple pie, but at least as delicious. It is considered the oldest known cake in the world and comes from the heart of Upper Austria. As early as the 17th century, this traditional pastry with its fine shortcrust pastry, fruity currant jam (currant jelly) and nutty almonds was valued as a culinary treasure. In Linz, the charming capital of Upper Austria, the Linzer Torte is more than a dessert – it is a cultural heritage, similar to the pumpkin pie in the USA or the butter tarts in Canada.
In the show bakery of the renowned Jindrak confectionery – a true Linz original – you can experience first-hand how craftsmanship and tradition come together. Under the guidance of an experienced pastry chef, you will create your own sweet masterpiece. At the end, you will not only hold a cake in your hands, but also a personal baking diploma - an enjoyable proof of your newly discovered Austrian baking skills. And don't worry: your Linzer Torte can of course be taken home with you, perfectly packaged as a culinary souvenir.
Program:
Your journey of pleasure begins at the Jindrak confectionery in Linz, a family business with a history that has stood for the highest art of baking for generations. There you can bake your own Linzer Torte - a highlight for all those who appreciate authentic craftsmanship.
Just a few steps away, another landmark awaits you: St. Mary's Cathedral, Austria's largest church building. As part of a guided tour, you will discover the impressive architecture and learn exciting details about the eventful history of the building. A moment of peace – and at the same time a journey into the spiritual and cultural soul of Upper Austria, comparable to the venerable cathedrals in Québec or Boston.
For lunch, you will go to a typical Upper Austrian restaurant, where down-to-earth cuisine and warm hospitality are on the menu - from juicy roast pork to vegetarian classics with a regional touch.
In the afternoon, a change of perspective awaits: On board the MS Linzerin you can enjoy a leisurely harbor cruise on the Danube. As the panorama of Linz's Old Town slowly passes by, you'll see the city from a whole new side – similar to a boat tour on the St. Lawrence River in Montréal or Lake Michigan in Chicago, only with Austrian flair.
